My last essay that I wrote was the worst piece of writing I'd ever had the shame to lay eyes upon.

my lecturers were always far more strict about word-count than punctuation
Mine are like that. You're allowed to be 10% over or under the word limit here. If you go more than 10% over, then the lecturers say they don't read it and mark your assignment as if you hadn't written that part at all.

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

iPad pictures do come out sideways, but, because of the lock screen feature, I can fix it! :p

That is a bit silly. Confront her about it and make your case. You can't be afraid of confronting your teachers, just like your teachers can't be afraid to admit when they are wrong.

Yeah, we kind of had an unofficial ±10% rule we followed, but our lecturers always said that we should just use the word limit as an indicator of how much depth and breadth they want in our essays and reports. So if we typed up like 1200 words for a 2500-word essay, there's definitely a lot of s*** you're missing out.
I think it was mostly practice for people who want to go into acadamia since it was mostly a research-based degree, and I think publishers get anal about journal articles that are over the word limit.

This used to happen to me in 3rd grade. The teacher made all of the girls somehow get amazing grades and everyday I came in I felt like an idiot as if I was genuinely stupid. Somehow everything I did was wrong and all the guys were dumb (except one who was treated like a genius). When I went to the next grade somehow I was suddenly the smartest in the class and with the highest state exam marks. And from what I remember the group of girls she favored turned out to be genuinely dumb and some getting left behind a grade too. I was too naive at the time to understand what was going on and I still don't completely understand why she'd just favor that odd group of people.

Today it's probably hard to get complaints against school teachers in but I think it's easier than it used to be back when I was a student. I say take advantage of that while you can.
